Chapter Sixteen

The following morning, Nash conferred with Clara. ‘I’m intending to speak to that solicitor sent to deal with Mitchell’s law practice. I want it clearly understood that by preventing us from accessing Mitchell’s files, he is impeding the murder inquiry. Naturally, being a lawyer, he’ll probably later deny the conversation ever took place. To be on the safe side, I’ll use the landline and put it on speaker, so you can witness our discussion. Again, being a lawyer, he’ll probably allege that we are in collusion, so for good measure, I’ll use the app on my mobile to record every word spoken.’ Nash paused and smiled. ‘Er . . . that’ll have to wait until Viv’s shown me how to use it.’

Now at the offices of Mitchell & Co., Henry Court had only been in Netherdale for twenty-four hours. Over the years as a practising solicitor, Henry had taken a lot of ribbing about his occupation and surname. The task handed down to him now, however, was no laughing matter. Almost as soon as he’d arrived, the secretary had informed him of the police requests to view all outstanding case files, and asked what she should do if they asked again.

‘Don’t tell them anything. Put them through to me and I’ll deal with it.’

Henry was annoyed by the police action. Throughout his training, and during his career, he had been strict in his application of lawyer–client privilege, and was a staunch defender of the right to privacy enjoyed by those who were paying for his services. Minor local officials, such as the police in a small rural unit, who attempted to breach that golden rule would get short shrift from him.

It was almost lunchtime when the call came in. The secretary interrupted Henry’s meeting with the intern, to inform him that Detective Inspector Nash was on the phone asking to speak to him. Henry was determined to nip any intrusion in the bud, even if it meant making life difficult for the police officer. A small-town plod, with no knowledge or respect for the workings of the legal system, warranted no special treatment.

‘Tell him I’m in a meeting and cannot be disturbed. Take his number and say I’ll call him back when I’m free.’ Henry almost added, Tell him not to hold his breath, but decided against going that far.

When the secretary relayed this information, Clara, who was listening as instructed, was surprised by Nash’s response. ‘I understand how busy he must be. I’ll speak to him when he’s ready, always provided I’m available.’

Having ended the call abruptly, Nash buzzed through to Steve Meadows. ‘If a guy by the name of Henry Court, or anyone from Mitchell & Co., phones and asks for me, tell them I’m out, even if I’m standing alongside you, OK?’

He smiled at Clara. ‘Obviously this comedian is playing hard to get. No problem. Two can play at that game.’
